9 Tips For Leaving Kids When You Travel

Hey friends. I am coming at you again from Florida. Brian is down here on a work trip and I came along for the ride. While he is out working on some sales calls I am just relaxing in the hotel and getting some things done for my Etsy store and blog. The holidays will be here before we know it.

This is only my second adults only vacation where we are flying somewhere. I am considering this a vacation for me, even though Brian will be working part of the trip. I am sharing 9 tips today for leaving kids when you travel.

I am very grateful for both sets of Grandparents who help out when needed. This time my mom came and stayed at my house for the week. Previously for shorter nights or weekends away the kids will just sleepover a grandparents house. Ella was with her dad for a long weekend and we adjusted our shared parenting for the week so my mom didn't have to drive back and forth. (Ella's father and I have a good relationship right now when it comes to adjusting schedules when needed). I also want to make note that I will be reachable 99% of the time, minus while in the airplane, and we are still on summer break so there is no worry about bedtimes, and getting to/from school.

  • All the lists
    • Emergency numbers
    • Menu for dinner that my mom and I went over before hand
    • passwords for tablets (texted to my mom so the kids can't see)
    • house alarm passwords (also texted to my mom so my kids don't see it)
    • schedule of what the kids have planned
    • What needs done around the house
      • garbage day
      • feeding fish
      • how to use the dishwasher, washer, and dryer
      • where the vacuum is
  • Do all the laundry before we leave
    • One less thing for them to worry about and they will have plenty of clothes
  • Buy groceries ahead of time
    • The kids get all the snacks and picked out the menu for the week which was all meals that I mom would make.
  • Leave the keys
    • van keys incase she needs to take the kids anywhere, since car seats are already installed in the van.
    • truck keys just incase
    • garage door open
    • house keys
  • Find drivers for activities
    • Austin has one night of basketball. Brian's mom took Austin so my mom didn't have to take the other kids along too.
    • Two of my kids had a birthday party to go to, our one neighbor/friend took our kids with their kids.
  • Bedroom set up
    • My mom will be sleeping in my room potentially with Anna. Clean sheets, bathroom stocked with towels, toilet paper, counter space etc.
  • Clean
    • Yes the house will get dirty while you away but a fresh start is nice for everyone.
      • bathroom
      • sweep/vacuum
      • wipe counters
      • dishes
  • Money
    • We have very generous grandparents but want to leave money just incase.
  • Notify Neighbors
    • Letting our close neighbors know we won't be home but the kids will be. This lets them know to keep an eye out, and they usually offer play dates for the kids to give my mom a few hours of peace.
