Hey friends. In the last week we celebrated Anna's and Austin's birthday. There are so many balloons and streamers throughout my house, the inexpensive things that make them happy and feel loved. There are also presents everywhere because where do we put them all.
They are 4 days and 4 years apart with that means they will always have joined birthday parties. I grew up the same way with my sister and and my birthday 2 days apart. Even though they have to share their birthday parties they still get a special day on their birthday.
Each year we do certain birthday traditions. Some I started back 12 years ago when my oldest turned one. Some of these traditions my parents also did with my sister and I. Others we have also added over the years. Some traditions we have also removed with age, living situation or just because. Birthdays are meant to be special and however you celebrate your child is special for you. You can always add and remove traditions as fit for your family.
- Streamers Over The Door
I buy crepe streamer paper from the Dollar Tree. There are usually a variety of colors to choose from. I tape them hanging down. They love running/walking through the streamers for the next few days.
- Happy Birthday Banner
I usually grab one from Dollar Tree. Gender neutral that we reuse every year, until it gets destroyed then we grab a new one. I had it either in the dining room or living room.
- Breakfast of their choice
They usually pick donuts or pancakes. This year they picked Honey Nut Cheerio Cereal.
- Balloons
All over the house, in their room, I use to fill their crib (they were not sleeping in it). Who doesn't love playing keep it up with balloons or falling into a pile on the bed or couch. Game changer is this balloon pump. It is a little loud so I use it in the basement but no more getting light headed blowing up balloons.
- Dinner of their choice
Take out or home made. This year Anna picked chicken fries, and Austin picked pizza. Ella usually picked crab legs.
- Cake
They get to pick the flavor and if we make it at home or pick one up somewhere. Some years I have ordered custom cakes. Some years they are from Costco, other years my mom makes them.
- Presents
We do not go crazy on birthday presents. They normally get 4 or 5 small things, and sometimes a bigger gift to share. (the grandparents usually go crazy and don't listen)
- Birthday Countdown
Leading up to their birthday each morning we countdown how many days until their birthday. Usually for a week before their birthday, this year with Anna was like 45 days because she was so excited to be turning 5.
- Birthday Party
Some years it is bigger than others. Some years they get to have it someplace with friends, other years it is just family at the house. Having a special time just for them. (or my two youngest share the party)
A few things we have done previously but don't do every year;
- Sprinkles on everything
- Photo collage
- Birthday interviews
- Themed parties
- smash cake
