Bedside Book Review- May

Hey loves. Its book review day. How was your May reading? I am excited for summer reading outside while the kids are playing or splashing in the pool. Before that lets take a look back at what I read in May.

Jessica Simpson collected so much emotional baggage over the course of her life that she began to feel like she couldn’t carry anything else. She knew she needed to confront her fears. She made a to-do list for the life she wanted. No more struggling to please everyone else. No more dulling the pain. No more avoiding the scary stuff. From now on, she’ll focus only on the expectations she has for herself. With her inviting warmth and trademark intimacy, Jessica reflects on the example of her daughters and son, reclaiming her power and taking the lead in her own life.

I didn't know Jessica released a new essay until it showed up in my Prime reading options. It was a quick read. It has a great message and I recommend you spend a few minutes reading. 5 out of 5 stars.

Lisa Bevere will help you find your strength, not from trying harder or doing more but through a deep and devoted relationship with God and from knowing and following Him. Each of the 90 devotions featured in Strong includes Scripture, reflections and teaching from Lisa, a prayer, and an anthem of strength.

Devotional topics include:

  • Relational healing
  • Contentment
  • Redeeming regret
  • The strength of rest
  • How to be both powerful and gentle

With its gorgeous two-color design, Strong is a beautiful gift for sisters, friends, prayer partners, mothers, or any woman who loves God. Lisa's heartfelt and straightforward approach, in addition to her biblical knowledge mixed with personal insight, makes this a wonderful devotional experience to become the woman your heart longs to be.

This has not been my favorite devotional. I am sure it would sure well for a specific person, but that wasn't me. 2 out of 5 stars.

Northern Spy by Flynn Berry

A producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats, security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over her face.

The police believe Marian has joined the IRA, but Tessa is convinced she must have been abducted or coerced; the sisters have always opposed the violence enacted in the name of uniting Ireland. And besides, Marian is vacationing on the north coast. Tessa just spoke to her yesterday.

When the truth about Marian comes to light, Tessa is faced with impossible choices that will test the limits of her ideals, the bonds of her family, her notions of right and wrong, and her identity as a sister and a mother. Walking an increasingly perilous road, she wants nothing more than to protect the one person she loves more fiercely than her sister: her infant son, Finn.

Riveting, atmospheric, and exquisitely written, Northern Spy is at once a heart-pounding story of the contemporary IRA and a moving portrait of sister- and motherhood, and of life in a deeply divided society.

This book was part of Reese Witherspoon's Book Club. I borrowed it from my local library and had such high hopes about it. I just could not get into it. I tried reading it numerous times to see if my opinion of it would change and it did not. I give it a 2 out of 5.

Plant Over Processed by Andrea Hannemann

Lauren over at Don't Mind Our Mess recommended this book. I love the realistic outlook on using food to heal instead of medicine when available. I have been eating more raw fruits and veggies especially since reading this book but I personally am not looking to go vegan currently. I give the book a 4 out of 5 stars.

You’ve heard the rumors...

Yes, they’re all true. The women…the bank account…the really big…

Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m just saying, there’s a reason some call me Mr. Big. But none of it will matter to her. I’ve known her since we were kids. And she’s just as off limits now as she was then.

She’s my best friend’s little sister and when he asked me to give her the grand tour, he did not mean of my bedroom.

So Mr. Big has to stay under wraps… One problem, she’s the only woman I’ve ever truly loved. But with the secret I’m keeping, she’ll never love me back.

Loved this book from start to finish. 5 out of 5

This is the second recipe book that Joanna has released. I loved that she includes staples and seasoning mixes such as chia and pumpkin spice. Overall I didn't find that many recipes that I wanted to try. 3.5 out of 5

This is the recipe book that Joanna released. I love that her recipes have ingredients I already have on hand, and know where they are in the grocery store. I made two of her recipes so far, the after school banana bread and four cheese quiche. Both were hits in our family. There are so many other recipes that I want to try out of this book that I put it on my birthday wish list. I give this a 5 out of 5 stars.

  3. I overdosed on Fixer Upper right before the cookbook came out and I just couldn't. But I've read so many good things that I'm reconsidering.

  4. I think I had one of Joanna's books from the library at one point, but I think it might have been a design one-- not cookbook? I'll have to look for Magnolia Table. I miss Fixer Upper!
