10 Tips to Get Organized for Back to School

It is hard to believe that back to school is coming so quick. We start next week and many kids are already in school. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with so much to get done and things to buy. Not just for you, but also for your kids. I have some tips to help you get organized for less stressful back to school. If you already started school it isn't to late to make some changes around the house either. There is no time better than the present to switch up routines and get organized.

  1. Clothes- donate/throw out anything that no longer fits, has holes/stains, or they just don't wear. Each Sunday my kids and I pick out their clothes for the week. Based on specials, weather, etc. They each have one of these hanging in their closet and each slot is a different days of clothes. This will help mornings run a little smoother
  2. Landing Zone- Pick a designated space for bookbags, coats, shoes, etc. In our current house we have a mudroom where everything is housed. Previously bookbags went in the kids rooms behind their doors and shoes in the garage. Pick a designated space for all the paperwork. We have a wire basket in the office that all the paper work goes in. Then I go through what needs signed, saved, and recycled. I share more details of this in my family command center post.
  3. Morning and Evening Routines- From getting dressed to brushing your teeth to when you need to be out the door. Having a written out schedule has helped with not having to keep remind my kids what they have to do. They can cross off what they have done and what they still need to do with these dry erase sheet protectors. Come up with a routine that works for your family and your schedule.
  4. Set up a homework station. Have all the things in one place for easy access for homework. Keep it close to where your kids will be doing homework.
  5. Family Command Center- Calendar, cork board, where all the papers go from important to school work.
  6. Lunch Box Station- Keep all your lunch boxes, utensils, lunch box notes, etc in one space so you are not having to search for them in the rush to get out the door. (We all know it is going to happen) My kids lunch box
  7. Lunch Box Ideas- Come up with ideas for school lunches. Have ideas for proteins, snacks, fruits/veggies. Have a plan for buying, such as they can buy whenever they want or they can only buy once a week.
  8. Teeth/Hair Stations- This may sound a little much but depending on your situation this maybe helpful. We have an upstairs and a downstairs. On each floor we have toothbrushes, cups, toothpaste, hair brushes, and hair accessories. Instead of having to run up and down the stairs everything is easily accessible.
  9. Communication- Sit down with your kids and spouse and discuss what is expected of them and what they can expect. Such as who is getting them to and from school, ideas of lunches, what to do if they miss the bus, if someone isn't home when they get home, etc. This is also a great time to look at the school calendar and/or sports calendars and determine schedules and if you need to ask for help from your village.
  10. Calendars- Update and sync all your calendars. Add the school schedule, work, extra curricular, appointments, etc. We share a google calendar on our phones, I have a paper calendar for me, and we have a dry erase calendar for the whole family. Do what works for you.

There is no right way for getting organized. You have to do what works for your current situation. Getting organized for back to school can help make your days run smoother, prevent being rushed, eliminated unnecessary stress and anxiety. I hope these tips help you and your family have a successful back to school.
