Happy Tuesday!!! It has been a while since I joined Ashley and Erika for Tuesday Talk. Today I am joining in with some Curly Hair Talk. A few months ago I changed up my haircare routine and have gotten so many compliments I just had to share.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my curls. When I was little I had cute ringlets. I was known as the little girl with big brown eyes and brown curly hair. (how come I can't find a cute picture when I want to)

I also remember sitting in front of my mom for hours while she brushed out knots out of my hair while I cried in pain. I dreamed of having straight hair. When I was entering middle school, I went to a salon for the first time ever (my mother was also a hairdresser so she previously had always cut my hair herself). The stylist gave me a style that I would have to brow dry and curl every day for it to look good. What 11 year old do you know who is going to spend that time on their hair every morning? I can promise you it wasn't me.

As I got older I tried a lot of different styles from an inverted bob (that made me look like a puppy with floppy ears), to one length, lots of layers, and everything in between. Like everyone else I see a style on someone else or in a magazine and want to try it on myself. Some of the styles looked great if I spent the time straightening my hair everyday, oh the damage and time I spent, or used so much product to try and tame my curls until I stepped outside and my hair went poof.

A girlfriend recommended I read Curly Girl the Handbook by Lorraine Massey. I decided to give it a read. What harm could it do learning more about curly hair. I honestly didn't think I would really learn much at all. I am a licensed hairdresser, I learned everything at Cosmetology school right. WRONG.

If you have curly hair, your kids have curly hair, or you are a hair stylist I highly recommend reading this book, from a professional stand point and a personal stand point. It has completely changed the way I look at other curly hair and the way I treat my own curly hair.
From IDENTIFYING DIFFERENT CURL TYPES (I have corkicelli curls) to PROPER DAILY ROUTINES (no poo shampoo only and leave conditioner in hair, brush hair in shower with fingers) to CUTTING CURL HAIR and MORE can all be found in this book.

What has changed for me?

Shampoo- I no longer use a regular shampoo. I use a sulfate free shampoo. Currently I am using Deva Curl- No Poo Original Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser. It did take me a while to get use to not having lather when I washed my hair, which is from sulfate in normal shampoos that can be very drying and damaging to your hair.

Conditioner- I leave the conditioner in my hair instead of rinsing out. I am currently using Deva Curl- One Condition Original Daily Cream Conditioner

Brushing- I am only brushing or finger combing my hair while I am in the shower with conditioner on my hair. If I use a brush I am using a wet brush. This is also the brush I use on Aubriella's hair.

Stylist Products- Since I leave conditioner in my hair I haven't had to use any stylist products to hold my curl. The next day I will spritz with water and a homemade lavender spray.

Other- I use a microfiber towel to dry my hair.

Before:

Lots of product, washed every other day, horrible knots, most of the time wore in the pony tail, not much volume, spend at least 15 minutes trying to make my hair look presentable.

 After:

Wash every few days, no more crazy knots, lots of volume, no hair products, spend less than 5 minutes doing my hair.

Do you have curly hair? Do you love or hate it?

  1. I have curly hair. I gave up shampoo awhile ago, but I have not tried leaving the conditioner in my hair. Maybe I will try that!
